Cruelty Free Products

Know the facts before buying that sexy red lipstick.

I'm a big believer that once reality is exposed people will make the more humane choice. Some don't realize that most products we purchase are animal tested. Unfortunately Canada has yet to catch up with European countries that have banned animal testing.

Almost every product humans use on a daily basis is first tested on innocent animals. From cleaning products to make-up products, they must all be proven safe.

Some of the products that commonly involve animal testing are:

- Cosmetics
- Drugs
- Food Additives
- Supplements
- Household products
- Pesticides
- Industrial chemicals

To those that argue that animal testing must be done in order to ensure they are safe for humans, companies like LUSH, The Body Shop, ALBA Botanica, Burt's Bees and many more have found ways for you to still get products you enjoy, without harming any animals.

If you are interested in becoming a conscious shopper, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have made a list of cruelty free products.

The Leaping Bunny is also an easy way to find out whether the product you're interested in is cruelty free.

Please consider how much an animal suffered before purchasing items, consider a cruelty free lifestyle. As consumers we all hold the power to make changes, it's up to us to demand change, change for those that do not have a voice.

  1. I just watched the video and cried - it's so heartbreaking that animals are kept for testing. I try to ensure that I'm buying cruelty free products so thank you for including the link to a list of cruelty free products!

    1. Jen, it's great to hear that there are others that look for cruelty-free products! Hopefully more will join and stand up for animals used for animal testing.

  2. You finally hit a cord with me Maria. I hate what they do to the animals for animal testing. I am actually conscious of buying products that have not been tested on animals or from companies that don't test on animals. I just wish there was more that could be done.

    1. I did?!?! FINALLY!!! I'm on that same boat, wishing that we could do more, but for now buying cruelty free products sends a strong message to those companies still testing on animals.

    2. I am already a member of Peta and I make my own cleaning products out of vinegar and water. I only buy environmentally friendly (non animal tested) dish and laundry soaps. I own animals and deeply love them all. thank you for sharing your passion for the planet with us.

    3. Wendy, my mother does the same thing! She used vinegar to disinfect since it's organic. Glad to hear others share my passion and care for animals.

  3. Amazing blog Maria !

I totally second your theory, in saying that once people are exposed to the horrible nature of animal testing, it will convert many consumers to be a little more conscious and aware of their purchases. I am a LONG TIME member of PETA and prior to beginning post-secondary, worked at Lush Handmade Cosmetics for 5 years, contributing to many anti-animal testing committees !

Statistics show that with modern product testing on animals, the results are skewed and little information can be transferred from animal reaction to human reaction. It is inhumane, disgusting and degrading to the human race.

Again, what a passionate and genuine blog Maria, keep it up as I look forward to reading more :)

    1. LOVE LUSH!!! And I have also read all the stats on animal testing, and majority seem to point to the same conclusion you shared, results are not transferable to humans. You think that should be enough for people to realize that animal testing is unnecessary.

  4. Great blog Maria. It's important for people to understand how their products are tested before they buy. It's definitely become the consumer's responsibility to think twice about what they purchase in order to hold companies more accountable. That being said I absolutely love Lush products, they do great work and their products are awesome!

    1. Nowadays, it really is up to the consumer to decide the type of products they support, the sad part is that most people don't want to hear about how most products are tested and prefer to ignore the abuse animals are subject to. Every time I hear someone else say they support cruelly-free products, like those from LUSH, it encourages me to keep fighting for those without a voice.

      Thanks Adrianna!

  5. Can I just say how disgusted I am that this stuff still is going on?
Thanks for shedding light on this, so long as people keep it up hopefully sooner rather then later we can put a stop to this!

  6. Hi Maria,

I think that your post this particular week is by far the most powerful I've seen from our class this far. I used to be a member of PETA during university, but because they do sort of bombard you with animal cruelty pictures I had to end my membership - there's only so much of this I can take. I've seen the video before as well. I think there's something seriously wrong with people who hurt animals and work in these sort of professions. It's something I will never understand.

I think if I had any influence over policy-making processes, I would make testing on animals a criminal offense. Medical research is unfortauntely a different ballgame, but for cosmetics it's totall unneccessary.

    1. Kelly, I'm really hoping one day you will have influence over policy and that more people like you start protecting the other kind of living beings, animals.

  7. Oh my gosh, I just about cried while watching that video.
Thanks for sharing this, Maria. I agree with Kelly, using animals to test for cosmetics is really very unnecessary.

  8. This kills me. Like makes my insides twist into a ball of anger and anxiety. The fact that people can do this to animals breaks my heart to shreds. I'm so happy there are people like you standing up for the rights of animals. I've been buying non-animal tested cosmetics for years, but had no idea that cleaning products and such were also tested on them. More research for me!

  9. This post is so close to my heart! Thank you for sharing this information, it is so scary and so important for society to realize how their products are being. Animal testing breaks my heart, and it is important to be aware of the reality. Great work!

  10. Maria, this was a very emotional and motivating read for me. As a huge animal lover, it was tough reading and seeing what so many animals go through as test subjects. The whole concept is just so disturbing. I completely agree that all consumers must defend these precious beings and buy cruelty free products. There is NO excuse for companies to continue this despicable trend. It is time to fight back and free all these beautiful creatures!

Well done Maria, keep it up.

Thanks for sharing Maria - great post! (Lexa)
